Living Off-Grid in a Campervan During Winter

It’s been nine months since we gave our campervan a serious upgrade, with one goal in mind: living off-grid through an alpine winter. Winter came and went, spring rolled into summer, and now autumn’s here. Looking back, we’ve managed to spend a full eight months on the road with barely any need to pay for campsites or facilities. Yes, you read that right, we wild camped through almost the entire winter in snowy mountain conditions. Spring and summer felt like a breeze by comparison!

Upgrading Our Campervan for Year-Round Off-Grid Living

So, what changed? We swapped out our old batteries for two Epsilon 12v150Ah Super B lithium batteries, fitted an Autoterm 4-in-1 water heating system, and added a Unaka roof rack to mount new solar panels. These upgrades gave us more battery power, reliable hot water on demand, and solar that actually keeps up with our energy needs. All working together to make off-grid living that much easier.

Off-Grid Power That Survived 11 Days of Snowstorms

The Super B batteries were the real game-changer. By doubling our battery capacity, we suddenly had twice the freedom to live without plugging in. At one point in winter, snowstorms kept us parked up for days on end with almost no sun hitting the panels.

Normally that would’ve meant packing up and hunting down power, but with the new setup we lasted eleven full days without recharging. That meant more time skiing and exploring, and way less stress about where the next open campsite might be. And anyone who’s travelled in winter knows how rare open facilities are, so this was a massive win.

The financial side was just as important. Campsites in touristy areas can easily cost around €50 a night. Over a whole season, those fees add up fast. Being able to stay self-sufficient for so long saved us a huge chunk of money, and that saving went straight back into keeping us on the road for longer. For any van lifer, that’s the dream.

Staying Cool and Powered Through Summer Heat

And it wasn’t just winter where the Super B batteries proved their worth. In summer, off-grid life is usually easier thanks to constant sunshine, but high temperatures can make solar panels less efficient. Add in fans running all night when it’s 35-40°C, and you quickly burn through power.

Having the extra battery capacity meant we didn’t need to worry. In fact, the whole summer we only plugged in once, and that was after a stretch of bad weather where we stayed in one place for several days. Three months of travel with just a single day on hook-up… that says it all.
