We have the pleasure to announce that the OptiMate lithium charger model is available at Super B!
Lithium technology is known in the motorcycle sector under two different forms: lithium-polymer (LiPo) and lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4). The latter is, amongst other advantages, more stable, which is why Optimate have bet on this technology, developing the Optimate lithium as LiFePO4-only, with the help of their technical partner Super B batteries.
LiFePO4 batteries are much lighter than all lead-acid types and offer much more cranking power related to the size. These characteristics make them a must-have when it comes to performance and racing applications.
Back to the OptiMate lithium. Some battery manufacturers may claim that their products can be used and charged just like corresponding lead-acid types. This assertion is neither entirely true, nor entirely wrong. In fact, under normal circomstances, some conventional chargers will do a honest job, if an imperfect one. No particular hazard to fear, either. BUT, things change radically when circumstances get rougher. Ambient temperature, for a start, is crucial. Charging parameters should be adapted accordingly or, under extreme temperatures, the charge might even have to be cancelled altogether. This factor implies the necessity of a temperature sensor, which most chargers don't have. Charge maintenance needs another approach too, as do battery recovery and test modes – both OptiMate exclusives.
