Team WD-40 took to the track for the first time this season at Brands Hatch for what promised to be the start of a very exciting season. The season opener was always going to be a weekend of learning with all three riders making their debuts for the team.
Barry Burrell made our debut in the Superbikes class and started the process of really getting to know his crew of Geoff Crust, Danny Wright, Tom Wood and Richard Freemen. Barry has ridden the ZX10r before but needed to work hard with the team as we continue our development of the Kawasaki for use in Superbike still with some vital components missing. Developing the bike at race meetings is not the ideal way but circumstances currently dictate finishing in 20th place overall was solid start for the team.
Tarran (Taz) Mackenzie also made his debut in the Superstock 600 class earning valuable points. The weekend had seen Tarran and his Crew Chief Garry Burrell making significant improvements in every session and the whole team were delighted to see such a solid performance from the promising youngster
Ben Young really had a baptism of fire over the weekend learning the depth of competition in the Superstock 1000 class and how cruel the British weather can be. Ben and his Crew Chief Mark Benson were making progress through the weekend when Ben was caught with a huge crash resulting in him not being able to race!
Barry Burrell: “ The weekend did not go our way as far as results go but my crew and I got through a huge work load and made improvements along the way. We have some more parts arriving and should be in better shape at Oulton Park”
Ben Young: “It has been a long and disappointing weekend for me, we started to make improvements and then the crash which effectively finished my weekend as we had no further chance to improve. I will test tomorrow at Oulton and start to work forward from there!”
Taz Mackenzie: “It was a great first weekend with the Team, we made small improvement to both me and the bike all weekend and I am really happy to get the teams first points of the season!”
Team owner Brent Gladwin: “ The results this weekend by no means reflect the hard work put in by the whole Team to be there. We were welcomed into and the Team presence in the BSB paddock is fantastic. Tarran did a great job for us this weekend both on and off the track he is a good kid and we have great expectations for him. Both Barry and Ben worked hard have seen what they have to do to move forward. The Superbike its self is not quite there yet as we wait for some bits to drop into place, then we can really start to push forward”
